Picturing Zagreb

Zagreb Old Town Square

Possibly my favourite destination last year was the Croatian capital Zagreb. It seems to get a bit of a bad rap from travellers who choose to only stay for a day or two or to use as a base to visit Plitvice Lakes. I actually ended up putting off my trip to Plitvice for another year as I was loving the city so much I couldn’t bare to leave. I even looked at a couple of apartments to rent as I could totally picture myself living there.

Zagreb has everything I love in a city. It’s walkable. Even though the city is a little scruffy in parts, it’s coming out of its communist shell to reveal the beauty of its Austro-Hungarian era architecture. There’s a great cafe culture which in Zagreb’s case means almost every second business is a cafe and they’re all overflowing with patrons. It’s surprisingly green with a couple of great city parks and a huge woods bordering the old town. It’s a tough little city which merits more attention and I want to go back to discover more.
