Peering out the bus window, dusty pink and magenta hues covered the entire sky. The orange roofs of cream brick villas dotted the rocky coastline, all facing the sea and the tiny offshore islands. The scene literally took my breath away.
That September evening in 2010 was a magical first experience of Dubrovnik which I’ll never forget.
But over several trips since 2010, I’ve developed a love, hate relationship with Dubrovnik. The beauty still takes my breath away but the town has lost much of its character and charm (unlike nearby Kotor), smothered by the throngs of tourists that pour into the city every single day of the year. In summer the city is unbearable.
But I still can’t help but love it. The walled-in old stone town is stunning. The coast is beautiful. The islands are pristine. The water crystal clear. The light gives photos a special softness and clarity that I can’t resist. Each evening rewards you with a sunset seemingly more beautiful than the previous one. All these things make Dubrovnik worth visiting.
This spring I was lucky enough to make my fifth trip to Dubrovnik. I only stayed long enough for two sunsets but I know I’ll return another day.
I wanted to share my favourite photos from the last seven years. My memories of Dubrovnik.
