Ljubljana is a small city, and you don’t need to overthink where to stay. Book somewhere in or near the old town, and you’ll be walking distance from everything: the river, the castle, the cafes, and the market.
That said, there are some genuinely lovely boutique hotels here, and the standard has improved dramatically in recent years. After spending a couple of months in Ljubljana, I got to know the neighbourhoods well. Here are my picks.
Boutique Hotels in Ljubljana
Top Pick
AS Boutique HotelLocation: Prešeren Square
Stunning design, exceptional reviews, unbeatable location. AS Boutique is literally steps from Prešeren Square, the heart of the old town, and the quality matches the address. The interiors are elegant without being stuffy, the service gets consistently high praise, and you’re right in the middle of everything.
Pros: Perfect location, beautiful design, excellent service.
Cons: Premium price. But you’re paying for the location.

Great Alternative
Heritage Hotel
Location: Near Cobblers’ Bridge
Check Availability
A slightly more affordable option with an equally brilliant location. Heritage Hotel sits near the river, across from Cobblers’ Bridge, surrounded by restaurants and bars. The building has character, the rooms are well-designed, and you’re in the liveliest part of the old town. A strong choice if AS Boutique is booked or out of budget.
Budget Pick
Adora Hotel
Location: Central Ljubljana
Check Availability
Way more affordable than the design hotels, but still well-located and well-reviewed. Adora is a small hotel in a quiet spot, central but not on a busy street. If you’d rather spend your money on food and experiences than a fancy room, this is the smart choice.
Inside the Park
Hotel Cad
Location: Tivoli Park
Check Availability
This one’s different. Hotel Cad sits inside Tivoli Park – Ljubljana’s big green space – which means you’re surrounded by trees rather than buildings. It’s a 15-minute walk to the old town, so you trade convenience for tranquillity.
The attached restaurant, Gostilna Cad, serves excellent traditional Slovenian food. I ended up there after a morning Cycling in Ljubljana. If you want to wake up in nature but still be close to everything, this is a good option.
One I’ve Stayed At
Hotel Cubo
Location: Congress Square
Check Availability
I’ve stayed at Hotel Cubo, and a friend did too and loved it. It’s a bit older than some of the newer design hotels, but it’s well-maintained and in a great spot near Congress Square. Reliable, comfortable, good service.
Sustainability Certified
NEU Residences
Location: Near Train Station
Check Availability
If sustainability matters to you, NEU Residences has the certifications to back it up. It’s close to the train station (convenient if you’re arriving by rail) and the design is modern and minimal. A good option for eco-conscious travellers who don’t want to compromise on style.
Where to Stay in Ljubljana
Ljubljana is compact. You can walk across the centre in 20 minutes, and there’s no bad neighbourhood for tourists. That said, each area has a different feel.
Old Town (Staro Mesto)
The obvious choice and where most visitors stay. The old town is almost entirely pedestrianised, with cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured buildings, and the castle looming above. You’re within walking distance of everything: the Triple Bridge, the Central Market, the Dragon Bridge, the riverfront cafes.
The downside is that it can feel busy during the day, especially in summer when tour groups pass through. But it quietens down at night, and the convenience is hard to beat. AS Boutique and Heritage Hotel are both here.
Riverside
Technically part of the old town, but worth calling out separately. The strip along the Ljubljanica River is where Ljubljana comes alive, especially on warm evenings. Bars and restaurants spill out onto the embankments, and the whole city seems to gather here. If you want to be in the middle of the action, look for something near Cobblers’ Bridge or the fish market area. Heritage Hotel is right in this zone.
Tivoli
The park side of the city. Tivoli is Ljubljana’s largest green space, popular with joggers, dog walkers, and anyone looking to escape the crowds. Staying here means waking up surrounded by trees rather than tourists. The trade-off is a 15-minute walk to the old town, though it’s pleasant and mostly flat.
Hotel Cad is the obvious choice here, and the attached restaurant serves some of the best traditional Slovenian food in the city.
Train Station Area
Functional rather than charming. The area around Ljubljana’s main station has improved in recent years, but it’s still more practical than picturesque. That said, it’s convenient if you’re arriving late or leaving early, and it’s only a 10-minute walk to the old town. NEU Residences is nearby and a solid option for eco-conscious travellers.
Congress Square and Surrounds
A slightly quieter alternative to the riverside, Congress Square sits between the old town and Tivoli Park. It’s a handsome open space with government buildings on one side and park greenery on the other. You’re still central but away from the busiest streets. Hotel Cubo is in this area.
My Advice
Stay in or near the old town unless you have a specific reason not to. Ljubljana is small enough that location isn’t a major decision. You’ll spend most of your time walking the same streets anyway, and the difference between areas is measured in minutes, not difficulty.
If you’re here for more than a few days or working remotely, somewhere near Tivoli might suit you better. I spent a couple of months in Ljubljana as a digital nomad and appreciated having green space nearby. But for a first visit or a short trip, the old town is the obvious choice.
