Having visited the Nuremberg Christmas Market several times, I’ve learned the hard way how important it is to book accommodation well in advance. The market gets incredibly busy, and hotel availability near Hauptmarkt can be pretty limited.
Where to Stay
The market happens on Hauptmarkt in the Old Town. This huge cobblestoned square is lined with shops, cafes, restaurants and amazing bakeries. You’ll also find the 14th-century Frauenkirche and the Beautiful Fountain, which looks like a Gothic spire but can be hard to spot amongst all the stalls.
If you want to stay close to the action, anywhere near Hauptmarkt is ideal.
I’d probably avoid the train station area as it’s about a 15-minute walk. This might be fine normally, but Nuremberg gets very cold and rainy in November and December. That said, if you’re arriving by train, it’s not a bad area and I’ve stayed there myself. It’s also close to the History Museum and New Museum, both of which I recommend.
Another option is near Albrecht Dürer’s House – the original home of one of Nuremberg’s most famous Renaissance artists. It’s interesting to see inside a historic half-timbered house. This area is at the base of Nuremberg Castle with lots of great cafes nearby. It’s about an 8-minute walk to the market, though 20 minutes from the train station.

I stayed here when I visited the market. It’s quieter and a bit further out, but perfect if you’re arriving by train as it’s directly opposite the central station. Spacious, clean rooms with bathtubs and well-stocked minibars. The breakfast is good and staff are friendly. They have solid sustainability certifications too.

Nuremberg is very pedestrian and bike-friendly. Much of the Old Town is car-free, so it’s safe and easy to explore on foot. The city has efficient trams and buses if you need them.
